2016 Wasn't All Bad!

It seems like the general consensus is that 2016 was really !@$#%$ up! I have been thinking about this a lot in the last few days and feel just as frustrated, angry and sad about all the deaths and crappy things that happened this year as everyone else.

After really reflecting on it, I started to think hmmm... could it be that this negative thought process has become part of the collective through media sensationalism and fake news stories? After all it couldn't have been that bad, . . .Right?!

I decided to take a look and after googling "good things that happened in 2016" It was astounding to see all the positive things that happened.

We saw good sportsmanship between competitors at the Olympics as well as many gold medals we won by our Olympians. 

The First women to be nominated to a major party presidential ticket.

 The Americas have been deemed Measles Free.

The unemployment rate hit a pre-recession low.

Teen pregnancy is down and high school graduation rates are at a record high. 

World Crime is at a low.

The Ozone hole is repairing itself.

Pakistan made motions to end honor killings

Harriet Tubman is going to be on the new $20 bill

Endagered animals are thriving

Medicines were developed to make significant differences in Cancer, Alzheimer's and ALS.
And Heart Disease is declining!

The list goes on and on and it is a reminder that we need to stop the senseless fear inspired reporting that goes on and that goes viral on social media.

We are in control of how awesome the year is and we need to stop letting our environment create how positive or negative our state is.  Let's concentrate on what we do want to see more of and stop perpetuating what we don't want in our lives. 

For every negative story on Facebook or in the news, I challenge you to find something good and positive and share those stories. This is not to take light away from the bad things that happen throughout the year,. Our brains are programmed to remember those things. It is part of evolution and what keeps us safe. It is much harder to remember the good things so it is important to really focus on these events as they will keep us sane when heartache comes! If you find it particularly difficult to find some good news in a day there are always videos of baby animals to post!

Why does it not matter if I buy anti-aging skincare?

It seems that every minute we are being bombarded with the latest and greatest in the beauty industry there are so many claims and so many steps. What does it all really boil down to?

Time and time again I am asked why I prescribe skin care that doesn't say anti-aging on the bottle. The reason that I don't pay much attention to that is that the word anti-aging is marketing and meant to get you to buy in. I whole-heartedly believe that if you stick to the basics and keep your skin balanced it will heal and rejuvenate itself. The skin is a miraculous organ that is meant to keep us waterproof, absorb, provide heat regulation, it's our first defense in our immune system, it is a sensory organ and it provides detox for waste. Without our skin, we would not live for long. For all it does, I think we forget how resilient and amazing it is!

Here are some simple ways that you can give your skin what it needs for a long term youthful appearance

Your skin naturally desquamates. It is literally shedding right now! We loose 40,000 skin cells in 40 minutes!

Stop over exfoliating and scrubbing  When we do activities like scrubbing daily or using chemical peels that are aggressive what we are actually doing is scrubbing off our protective barrier and allowing all the water to evaporate leaving a dehydrated unprotected skin. We are also actually causing a low-level inflammation that you will think is a good thing when your wrinkles disappear, however, a few years down the line when you start to see brown spots and more wrinkles you will realize that this low level "skinflammation" was really creating aging. exfoliating is recommended just stop trying to scrape your skin down to baby level!

Eat Fat Really! fat doesn't make you fat and interestingly our cell membranes are made out of the stuff so without it in the diet it makes it hard to make plump beautiful cells that allow water to flow in and out. Eat only the good stuff! Stay away from hydrogenated trans fats and industrial oils like canola or cottonseed, which are all inflammatory. Upgrade and include coconut oil, avocado, and wild caught fish to your diet

Choose chirally correct vitamin C and look to see what co-factors are delivered with it. C by itself is fine, but for your cells to recognize and utilize it properly it is typically packaged with amino acids. 

Simplify Your Skincare When choosing products I recommend evaluating the net loss this means if an ingredient is going to challenge the skin what are you losing in exchange? Is it going to result in inflammation or lack of circulation? There are a lot of products that include high amounts of acids and things that are immunosuppressors which give you instant gratification and are accepted and approved however will not keep you looking good for long. There are so many superfluous ingredients on the market that haven't been proven to do anything and maybe in theory sound good, but there are no mechanisms for their benefit. Sticking with Vitamin C and Vitamin A are your best bet for repair. Choose chirally correct vitamin C and look to see what co-factors are delivered with it. To really make a difference you want retinaldehyde. This is the form that is normally found in the dermis and the skin uses it to make nice fluffy collagen. Your skin will know what to do with it and it won't cause inflammation to get there. Conventional forms of vitamin A include retinols and retinoids as well as prescription levels. These ingredients irritate the skin while it is moving throughout the epidermis. If you have ever experienced it it's pretty rough! Going back to the theory on inflammation and how it actually causes more long term harm the conventional forms of A really don't have a benefit long term. Not only are they irritating, but they thin the skin out leaving redness and swollen capillaries. 

There is no such thing as Anti-aging! All skincare that balances and feeds the skin is performing a function to support aging skin!

My advice is to use less and invest in the best quality ingredients as well as delivery systems. Our skin can only really absorb about 2-5% into the epidermis without the help of delivery systems. Liposomes are a great way to deliver nutrition at home and devices like microcurrent are fantastic in the treatment room to aid in a larger dose of the ingredients. Choosing products specifically for antiaging will get you lots of exfoliants and fragrance as well as typically heavier moisturizers. These may not even be suited for your skin type and concern and, furthermore may do more harm than good!

And Then You Get To Eat Ice Cream!

Sometimes we fail, but it's the journey where we learn to succeed and then you get to eat Ice Cream!

In the interest of self-care and living life to the fullest. My business partner Alyssa and I took a break a couple of Sundays ago. We both have been dealing with autoimmune flairs and feeling pretty yucky. Humans are fascinating in the ways we cope with good and bad stress. It almost gets to the point you don't even realize that you are struggling! I once in my early twenties while working three jobs while also enjoying being in my 20's went to the Dr. complaining about back pain. What she found is that I was so stressed that my shoulders were like cement and were living up by my ears. She said to me "this is what I am going to do. I am going to write a prescription for you to go get a massage once a week." The reason she did this was so that I took it very seriously. Not only was this a profound way to make me take notice and care for myself, but in a way it was the permission I needed to not look at massage therapy as a luxury. She said "you will be very surprised once you know what your body is supposed to feel like and wonder how you were ever in the state you are in!"It is something that has taken me on the journey of loving and caring for myself and am eternally grateful for that caring Dr.

Business has been growing and with personal appointments and household responsibilities it definitely has been difficult to juggle and it is easy for work stuff to creep in to other areas of life so Alyssa and I decided to create a little space that was just about making some nourishing autoimmune friendly ice cream and watch a movie. The rules were simple no work talk, just fun! There are studies that show it is important for women to carve out girl time. It is proved that for women we need this important bonding time with friends for our hormone and mental health. Not having these connections can be as harmful as smoking!

It was even fun to plan. we spent the week sending Pinterest recipes back and forth and decided on mint chocolate chip. We figured lets not get too fancy since we haven't made ice cream together before. We divided up the ingredient list and planned to meet at Alyssa's for 10 am. Alyssa just moved into a beautiful apartment near the river and it was the perfect opportunity to see her new space and what she has done to create a beautiful inspiring space for herself. The place was amazing! She even has a tranquil window seat that is set up as a meditation area!

 It is so important to have an inspiring home and work space. Something like 20% of people are not successful due to clutter and uninspiring environments. We took a short walk in nature near the river and enjoyed the weather a little before heading inside to make magic happen in the form of healthy ice cream!

We decided that making the chocolate chips from scratch wasn't in our interest so we purchased carob chips to add to the following ingredients (in the last few minutes pour some carob chips in to the ice cream maker)
  • 1 (14 oz) can full fat coconut milk, 
  • 1 Teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 Teaspoon pure peppermint extract
  • 6 Tablespoons honey
  • 1 Medium Hass avocado
  • Pinch of sea salt

Blend everything but the chips in a high powered blender. Put the mixture in the refrigerator for a couple of hours or in the freezer for about 30 to 45 minutes. Then pour mixture into an ice cream maker for 15 to 20 minutes. Add carob chips when there are 5 minutes left. serve and enjoy! If you want a firmer consistency you can place in an airtight container and store in the freezer for 1-2 hours 

We ran into some challenges with our batch. I wouldn't say it was Pinterest Fail level, but it definitely wasn't ice cream texture. It was super tasty though and we laughed a lot through the process. The thing with failing is that you aren't failing if you are trying. We loved the process of bonding and learning and can't wait to try again! Here is what we learned. The grocery store didn't have ripe avocado's so we used a green one. The blender we used wasn't as high power as we needed so instead of cream the texture was more like that space ice cream that you get at events.( The one that is little tiny balls of ice) We also learned that carob chips are tasty and reminiscent of something, but we can't figure it out! The movie was hilarious as well! All in all I would say this failed attempt was a success in many ways! and in the end there is always ice cream!

SPF Dont forget your lips, decollette, hands and ears!

We hope that you are all having an amazing summer and catching some essential vitamin D! In addition to the health benefits of the sun there are also disadvantages too. I know that we are all diligently putting SPF on and reapplying, right?! (wink, wink)
In all seriousness, it is definitely good to get a few minutes of early morning rays sans SPF, but protecting your skin during the peak hours of the day to avoid those negative effects. A few places we may forget, and are the first places to show age are the neck (back of the neck especially!) and decollete as well as the ears, lips and hands. says that lip cancers are 0.6 of all cancers in the U.S. and don't forget to tell the men in your life because they are more likely to develop lip cancer!
The easiest way to protect your lips is to use a lip balm or lipstick with sunscreen in it and for everything else don't be stingy with your SPF application!
These areas are thinner and less resilient so don't forget to apply and reapply there as well!

Summer Hair Help

Q: My hair is getting really dry and frizzy and the color doesn't seem to be lasting. What can I do to protect it better?
A: Summer time does do a number on your tresses with all of the exposure to the sun and frequent washing. Protecting it is easy and you can look cute while doing it! Conditioner is your first defense. Try applying conditioner before you head out to the beach. Finish the look with some sassy braids and a hat. You would be surprised to know that there are many hats that are made with SPF built right in! Try to avoid chlorine if you can and if you do some pool swimming definitely rinse your hair and skin right away!

Q: Is there anything I can be doing to keep my hands from aging? I am starting to see all kinds of lines and spots. I use hand cream, but worry that I can be doing more.

A: This is a great question and a source of anxiety for lots of us. Hands as well as the neck and decollete are the first places to show age. There are many reasons internally and externally to accelerate aging so it may be different reasons for some people. The first place I would look is to eliminate harsh soaps that contain sulfates or are really alkaline. These products strip your natural barrier and dehydrate the skin not only leading to lines and wrinkles, but could lead to eczema and rashes. Avoid washing your hands unless it is necessary too. few times a week use a gentle scrub or enzyme mask Antioxidants and peptides (like vitamin C and Matrixly3000) are really great for hands just like they are for the face so before bed use what is left on your hands from treating your face to nourish skin and use a lipid (oil based) cream before bed to re-hydrate the skin. During the day use a cream with SPF and brightening ingredients can be great protection against further damage! As an added bonus you can also add a hand treatment to your monthly facial service so that you are covering all the bases too!

How Does your Personal Care Routine Effect Your Health?

Since middle school we all experience a little body order and a natural desire to obliterate it. This is about the time that we start to experiment with (and sometimes over experiment!) with perfumes, powders. The marketing is brilliant and the products all smell so good, but what you don't know is that they typically contain hormone disrupting ingredients. Sounds serious right?!  It definitely is!

Our endocrine system is responsible for our growth and development as well as reproduction. It is a delicate system where perfect amounts of hormones dance with each other in lock step. There are a few different ways it can get out of wack. Not enough sleep or the right kind, stress both good and bad, and environmental toxicity can throw us off making us grumpy, over weight and sick.

So what's the big deal with a little antiperspirant or perfumed lotion to cover up unpleasant body odor? . . . .Your skin is an organ and one of it's functions is absorption. Many of these lotions and perfumes contain many ingredients that tested on their own don't show much concern, however the studies don't take into account that the average woman is layering sometimes as many as 20 products from head to two!

Our bodies are magnificent and a true example of divine artistry. When we are being exposed to toxins like this it knows what to do. It breaks these toxins down and stores them in fat cells which is an eloquent short term solution. The problem lies with chronic exposure. what happens then? Not only do we gain weight, but we start clogging up our liver with fat as well. It is the first time in history where we are seeing Fatty Liver Disease on the rise and the majority of the time it is not being caused by alcoholism anymore. This is a real concern especially as our products are not regulated the way they are in other countries and we are putting these ingredients on our infants and children as well.

In my treatment chair I see all kinds of skin conditions. Inflammation is the number one thing I see. It results in , dark spots, acne, dry skin, hair loss, brittle nails, red irritated skin like rosacea, eczema and psoriasis. Environmental Toxicity is one of the main causes I would look at if you are suffering from anything like this. This is also why it drives me nuts when a client tells me that their Dr. said that their condition is hormonal and there is nothing they can do.

It's not just our personal care products for our bodies that can be harmful to our health. . .

I once had an esthetics student ask me to help problem solve an issue a family member was having with her skin. The family member's feet were peeling and cracking. This was so uncomfortable and they had also become infected which was dangerous. I asked her a few questions and thought about it for a day. I was sure I had asked everything. She said that she wasn't doing anything new and all of the products were the same, and then. . . It hit me! I asked her if she cleans the shower barefoot. My student said yes! I mentioned that the chemicals in the cleaner were causing contact dermatitis. This was something that the Dr. had missed and was a huge piece of the puzzle to get the condition under control. The soles of the feet are very porous and this was not only affecting the skin on her feet, but her liver was going to have to deal with the toxins as well! As cleaning homes was her profession you can imagine what the long term implications could have been.

Review: Rooted Athlete All Natural Deodorant

I have a secret. . . I stink! I'm not kidding, I typically buy mens deodorant because it is stronger. For years I have wanted to switch to natural deodorant because I have heard such awful things about convential brand antiperspirants and deodorants, but I could never get them to work past a couple of days:/  part of that is because after a couple of days you start detoxing the crap from the toxic deodorant and with working in close proximity over people I could never risk getting through that stage.

How toxic could regular deodorant be? Let's take a closer look at the ingredient deck of one of my go to brands

Leading Conventional Women's Deodorant/Antiperspirant

Aluminum Zirconium Tetrachlorohydrex GLY (18.2%) The EWG states that this ingredient is of low moderate concern. It does have restricted use and can't be used in aerosols because it can cause organ toxicity. This ingredient has been known to clog pores and sweat glands, irritate skin. For those who are not detoxing their estrogen properly sometimes can see a reaction to the metal of pigmentation in their underarms.
GranulomasCancer and toxicity

Cyclopentasiloxane this is listed as the first ingredient, meaning that the formula is mostly this type of silicone.It is used because it doesn't leave residue on the skin and carries the active antiperspirant ingredients into the skin. It is listed as low moderate and there are some toxicity and neurotoxic concerns as well as it is known to bio accumulate.

Stearyl Alcohol, This ingredient is benign and rates the lowest in toxicity, however there is no way to know the source of this ingredient. Stearyl alcohol can come from plants and animals (particularly the Sperm Whale, so cruelty may or may not be an issue)  It is in the formula as an emulsifier it helps bind other ingredients together and allows for slip.

C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate low concern. It is an emollient as well as anti-microbial.

PPG-14 butyl Ether Considered low concern. Derived from petroleum and is a result of a chemical reaction between polyethelene glycol and butyl glycol.

Hydrogenated Castor oil  Low concern, however not much is known in regards to environmental toxicity or if it is bioaccumulating. When oils are hydrogenated they become one molecule away from being plastic and don't breakdown easily.

Fragrance (Parfum) This is a high concern for personal care products. This term represents upwards of 3000 mixtures of ingredients and there is no regulation on what can be used. The concern here is potential, formaldehyde releaser, hormone disruptor, allergen, irritant. neurotoxin, carcinogen, migrain inducer, trigger for asthma. A lot of mixtures are petroleum derived as well.

Polyethylene possible irritant

BHT Preservative.  Potential irritant, could be harmful and carcinogenic. Studies are typically in regards to high doses and if ingested, however some in vitro testing does show cell mutation

Overall many individual ingredients show little to know concern, but studies have not been conducted on what happens when you combine them and many of them aid in absorption of questionable ingredients. I would also be concerned in regards that some of these ingredients may be formaldehyde releasers and hormone disruptors. There is a huge concern for breast health as well as hormone health. You also have to factor in that a lot of people are shaving and this is a form of exfoliation. Exfoliation also aids in product penetration so a lot of these ingredients are being absorbed more than we think. If all that wasn't an issue I would still be against using this product as there is no nutritional value in it. Your under arms have skin and hair as well as a large number of lymphatic and sweat glands that are used for detoxification. Many of us quickly wash with soap and then replace with more deodorant and antiperspirant clogging the pores and creating problems like sweating more and cysts.

Organic Coconut Oil This is a great oil in a formula as it provides emollient benefits along side with essential fatty acids for the skin it is naturally anti microbial and anti-fungal, however it doesn't disrupt your microbiome

Organic Carnuba Wax Thickening agent prevents caking. Sourced from carnuba palm leaves in Brazil. FDA considers safe as a food additive.

Organic Arrowroot Powder Thickener, Detoxifier. This is a great alternative to cornstarch in cooking and beauty applications. The process of extracting arrow root powder is less labor and resource intensive and it used to be used in ancient times to heal wounds from poisonous arrows.

Organic Shea Butter Conditioning agent. Contains fatty acids for the skin. It is regenerating and anti-inflammatory

Baking Soda Balances pH. Skin is acidic and your underarms are a warm dark place for bacteria to grow. Baking soda helps to neutralize the pH a little. There is a concern for rashes and irritation with this ingredient and you may have used a natural deodorant before and it caused a rash. That may have been due to a higher dose of Baking soda in that formula. I found this deodorant to be gentle in that regard.

Organic Essential Oils A much better alternative to Fragrance. The aroma in this formula is light and is safe for use on the skin and body..

Comparing the two, you can see the second option is a much healthier choice with less ingredients that are more supportive and nutritious for the skin.

So I am not going to lie. . . I was nervous. I didn't wear sleeves the first day and kept checking all day and found that I didn't smell at all! On day two I wore long sleeves and didn't have to worry at all. I will say that I benefit from doing a touch up somewhere mid to late afternoon, but that's just for added security:) It has been a week and have found that this deodorant is working perfectly!

I can't tell you how excited I am to have found a much healthier product to use as a deodorant!

Wake Up More Radiant!

I love efficiency and getting skincare results with minimal steps. So when I heard about the K Beauty trend of sleeping packs I was intrigued! Who wouldn't want their skincare to do all of the heavy lifting while you sleep so that you can wake up more radiant and supple!

We are all supposed to be a little fuzzy, but for some it causes a lot of stress and anxiety. Waxing is effective, however it can cause dark spots due to the heat and trauma to the skin, not to mention for some it hurts more than is worth.

Waxing is great for just a lip or a chin, but for the whole face you may want to look at alternatives. The results of waxing leave the skin soft and smooth, but for some leaving the salon with welts is not worth the trouble and others can experience breakouts as well.

Brighten + Lighten +Tighten

The three magic beauty words! As many of you know I am comitted to bringing you highly effective skincare that is both safe and cost effective. I recently have decided to bring IMAGE Skincare into the business. Over the last couple of months I have been experimenting and enjoying the results of the products. IMAGE is dedicated to using superior ingredients and achieving outstanding results. All of the products are formulated by Physicians and manufactured here in the US. I was also really happy to find that they are paraben free and they have many segments so that an individuals routine and services can be completely customized! So having signed on I have been taking classes towards their certification program. This month I went to the designer peels class and completely fell in love with the treatments. My classmate did the Signature Face Lift peel on me because I am a little dehydrated, but I was having a little breakout. She chose this four layer peel for me because it will lighten the scaring from my breakout, increase my hydration, even my skin tone and minimize lines and wrinkles. All of this without any downtime! This treatment can be done as a rapid results series every two weeks for a several weeks and then followed by once a month to maintain healthy skin. These series are best done in the fall or late winter. In the meantime doing monthly maintenance treatments with the appropriate skincare will prep your skin for the series.

Double cleanse method:
Cleaning your skin with oil may sound like a really bad idea, but in fact it is probably THE best thing you could be doing to get your skin cleansed properly without stripping it. Why does this idea actually work? It is in the law of attraction! Oil attracts oil and helps to break it down and create surface tension on the skin allowing dirt, makeup, cellular debris, and excess oil to be vacuumed right off. Another benefit to this method is that as you perform the cleansing you are massaging the tissue bringing up circulation and allowing the skin to “take out the trash” as well as bring nutrients to the skin. Massage is something we don’t do often enough and this little bit of self-care will not only be a great step in beginning your relax and restore time, but provide an important role in keeping your skin YOUNG and RADIANT
I am sure you have heard that oil can be Comedogenic, but it isn’t that simple. Yes, some oils are more likely to clog pores, however choosing oil blends and/or minding your specific skin type when choosing oils makes a big difference.
Here are some oils to try based on skin conditions, and for a more customized treatment ask your licensed esthetician to choose for you.

Oily or acneic skin:
An oily skin type has larger pores throughout the face and tends to over produce oil (the over production actually comes from the inside so looking into diet and lifestyle may be helpful as well)
an oil with a high fatty acid profile will actually trap dead skin cells on to the skin making the pores become clogged and irritated. You may not have oily skin, but are experiencing breakouts. The oils recommended here also reduce inflammation and aid in wound healing so I would start here.
Oils can be used alone or in blends. Tip Castor Seed oil can be really harsh for sensitive skin so it may be best to use in a blend. My favorite oil for acne is Kukui Nut!

Dry Skin/Menopausal ( Dry tends to be poreless and it can have a lack luster appearance to it. Typically there is never a sheen on this skin. Also note that there is a difference between lack of oil= Dry and lack of water= Dehydration. This is why some may feel that they are both dry and oily at one time. In that case it may be beneficial to have a skin analysis before proceeding with a regimen.)
Tip Rosehip oil should be in a blend and start slow as some may react to it.
Sensitive Skin:
Sea Buckthorn, Sweet Almond Oil, Sunflower Oil

How to:

Take a small amount (dime size) of your oil or mixture and start massaging the skin in upward circles. Doing upward circles ensures that the oil makes it into the pores for deep cleaning. Massage longer in areas of congestion and you may cleanse any eye makeup or mascara with the oil as well. (be gentle in the eye area)

Once thoroughly massaged take a microfiber cloth and run it under hot water. Use the cloth to remove the oil from your face. Follow with a quick cleanse using a sulfate free cleanser. Your skin will feel smooth and squeaky clean, but balanced!

24 Hour Face Lift

The newest trends in anti-aging beauty are coming out of Korea. They are leading in research and technology and inspiring companies to do really cool things with their products. One of the most popular trends out of Korea is sheet mask technology. Masks can contain all kinds of ingredients to treat a variety of skin problems.

Bioxidea is a U.S. company that has been bitten by the bug and is doing really great things with natural and effective ingredients. It is a really cool line and I am happy that the ingredients are thoughtfully crafted to avoid parabens and other harmful ingredients. Their Miracle 24 mask uses aloe, antioxidants, peptides (to freeze expression muscles!) and sodium hyaluronate to create a lifting effect in the skin and smooth out expression lines.

The bio-cellulose material helps to deliver the ingredients and is a wonderful medium for applying the product as it doesn't budge. You can literally walk around while the mask is working and you don't have to worry about it falling off! You do look a little weird with it on, but the results are instantaneous! Lots of celebs are discovering the Bioxidea magic and sharing on social media. Even the Beibs has instagrammed his experience with the Miracle Mask.

After trying the mask myself, I definitely noticed a difference and have used it on clients who were going to an event. I noticed firmer more hydrated skin and fine lines disappeared. I definitely feel that the mask lives up to it's name!

I Like Big Brows, And I Can Not Lie!

My Esthetics career started at a salon that didn't have enough spa rooms at the time to take on another esthetician. The spa owner saw something in me and wanted to give me an opportunity so we put our heads together and found a closet in the back of the spa that was big enough for a spa bed and allowed me to do limited services.

 So basically, I did brows 6-8 hours a day 5 days a week and perfected my brow game. Pretty soon I became obsessed with creating the perfect shape for each woman. Seeing her face when she looked in the mirror and discovered how a small transformation really showed how beautiful she always was. It was then that I realized I could make a women see her true beauty and for some even turn back time!

Each brow has a unique map that reveals itself as I carefully peel away the layers. I equate it to pruning a bonzai tree. If you remove even one wrong hair and the shape is ruined!

Over the years I've seen it all! Let's face it, the 90's did a lot of damage to a lot of beautiful brows! We all know someone who has over-plucked their brows into a tadpole shape or completely lobbed the tales off into a vulcan-chic look.

Brows are important and it is essential that they don't distract from your beautiful eyes. It is very easy for things to go terribly wrong. So, what is the secret you ask? Follow the golden ratio. This is a mathematical equation used by artist, architects, designers and musicians to create masterpieces.
Your brows are sisters not twins and brow design is all about balancing and leveraging each hair.
This formula allows the artist to optimize each shape and create the perfect balance on the face. There is an easy system where you don't have to do algebraic equations to get your brows on point! Use a tongue depressor or makeup brush and line it up with the tip of your nose. Your brow should start just outside of the stick. Keep the stick in the same spot and move the top half to just outside your iris. This is where it should come to an arch. Keep the stick in the same spot at the end of your nose and move the top half to the outer corner of your eye. This is where it should end. 

So how do you get the perfect brow? I will let you in on my secrets. First things, first. YOU are BEAUTIFUL! Hair and all. I find that many women are over analyzing each hair and it leads to a lot of stress and plucking of really important hairs. So rule #1 is STOP! stop plucking, tweezing, worrying, looking and thinking about your brows. What you see 1 mm from your face in that 5 bajillion diopter magnifying mirror or your rear view is not the truth! It's only what you can see. No one is standing that close to you and if they are they probably think you are drop dead gorgeous! 

Hair grows in 3 stages and it takes about 28 days for the cycle. Plucking every day or sporadically without a plan just makes things so much worse. You are creating a cycle of chaos rather than a more low maintenance approach that leads to perfect brows. non-regimented brow grooming will lead to tadpole brows and friends don't let friends have bad brows!

So break up with your tweezers and forget about your brows for 4 weeks. "What!!! but I am so much hairier than everyone else!!!" um, so not true! I have never met anyone that this approach didn't work for and if you do have thicker coarser hair this actually will thin it out. After 4 weeks see your brow girl for the "Re;shaping". This visit will set the foundation for what is to come. Big, Bold, Beautiful brows that stop traffic and are the envy of all of your friends. Think of this as a training program and the easiest way to get into shape without exercising! Your brow girl will also show you how to apply makeup to distract from the regrowth and keep your brows on fleek everyday.

Rule #2 continue to stop! You are not that person anymore! We are on the right track and amazing things will happen to your brows withing 3 visits and will make you an #archaddict Keep using your brow pencil and highlighter and remember what your goal is! As we keep grooming on a 4 week schedule schedule we are actually damaging the follicle so that it either stops growing or an immature hair grows in it's place over a short time it leaves a crisp line and the hair gets sparser and sparser. After three visits you will notice that the regrowth is showing up all at the same time and closer to the end of three weeks. 

Tips from a Brow Artist:

Irritation, hives, bruising, pin point bleeding are all normal side effects of applying wax to the skin and pulling hair out at the root. 

Let your brow girl now if you are on any medications- certain medications can make you sensitive and cause dark spots if waxed as well as thin skin and lead to tearing or lifting. Certain topical acne and anti-aging ingredients can lead to this as well so be honest and tell your brow girl EVERYTHING you are using.

Sun exposure before or after is a really bad idea! waxing with a sun burn will just cause further damage and exposing newly waxed skin to the sun could results in brown stripes in the places where the wax was applied.

Hard wax is far more gentle than soft wax. It only adheres to the hair so if you have had bad experiences with soft wax check to see if she can use hard wax on you.

My final thoughts on brows is that you are the average of the 5 brows you surround yourself with so take a look around and get a brow girl!
